Named after Theodore von Kármán, the Karman line, which sits at 100 kilometers or 62 miles above sea-level, is conventionally considered as the boundary of the Earth's atmosphere and outer space. The reason we use the number 100 to define the Karman line is because it is an easier number to remember. Based on Karman's calculation, the theoretical limit of the atmosphere should be around 84 kilometers or 275,000 feet. Beyond this limit, the Earth's atmosphere will become too thin to support the weight of any aircrafts, which means an aircraft at this altitude would have to reach the orbital velocity to obtain enough lift to support its weight for the flight. The Karman Line is located at a few kilometers above the edge of mesosphere and thermosphere. So, it is within the region of the thermosphere where auroras usually occur.

Discovered in 1846, Neptune is the eighth and farthest known planet from the sun, with a distance of about 2.8 billion miles. It is the fourth-largest planet in the solar system, with a diameter of about 30,599 miles. The planet is about 17 times the mass of Earth, and slightly smaller than planet Uranus. Its atmosphere is composed mainly of hydrogen, helium, and methane. Methane in the atmosphere absorbs red light, giving the planet its distinctive blue color. The blue planet has 14 known moons, the largest of which is Triton, considered as one of the coldest objects in the solar system. Neptune has five main rings, which are relatively faint, and made up of small particles of ice and dust. The planet takes about 165 Earth years to orbit the sun. The only spacecraft to have visited Neptune was NASA's Voyager 2, which flew by the planet in 1989.
