The common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a small, brightly colored bird that is known for its distinctive hunting behavior. Here are some common behaviors that are observed when kingfishers are hunting:
Perching and scanning: Kingfishers typically perch on a branch or a rock near the water's edge, and scan the water for prey. They have excellent eyesight and can spot small fish and other aquatic creatures from a distance.
Diving: Once the kingfisher spots its prey, it dives into the water headfirst, using its wings to propel itself downward. It can dive to a depth of up to 1 meter (3 feet) and can stay underwater for up to 20 seconds.
Catching prey: When the kingfisher reaches its prey, it grabs it in its beak and returns to the surface. The kingfisher's beak is long and pointed, which helps it to catch and hold onto fish.
Returning to perch: After catching its prey, the kingfisher typically returns to its perch to eat. It will beat the prey against the perch to stun it and then swallow it whole.
