Eva Bedggood - Magnolia
Magnolia 木蘭 has many meanings in cultures, but the common thread is that this lush and delicate flower represents nobility, a steady presence, and purpose. One of the inspirations of the work comes from a book of poems titled ‘Magnolias’ by Nina Mingya Powels, a Chinese-New Zealand poet based in London. This ties together a concept of collaboration between art styles, specifically music and poetry, and Chinese and New Zealand-Western culture. The work separates out into sub-movement structures similar to that of a break in a paragraph within some of Nina’s poems, giving a multi-movement feel but in a micro-movement musical form, seamlessly flowing through each phrase. The concept of the poetry stands out in itself about the interweaving of identity and culture, a goal I try to make in my music often, and so it weaves together into this piece seamlessly.
