Creating a Convenient Household Battery Recycling Program
(Sacramento) -- Assemblymember Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara) wrote Assembly Bill 2284 to take non-rechargeable batteries out of the solid waste stream. Assemblymember Williams says AB 2284 would require Cal Recycle to develop and fund up to 3 local battery recycling pilot projects, which would be required to provide data to the department regarding the implementation and outcomes of the pilot projects. Non-rechargeable batteries account for 80% of batteries sold in California. Not surprisingly, it's estimated that less than 5% of used batteries are recycled through local government household hazardous waste programs. Assemblymember Williams says "The goal is to make sure that people know where they can dispose of their batteries and provide them with good opportunities to properly dispose of them."Here's more in this Assembly Web Report. http://www.asmdc.org/williams
