AN IRISH FLORILEGIUM: 48 Watercolour Paintings

WENDY WALSH Art connoisseurs have a rare chance to acquire a copy of this magnificent outsize volume, not least for the 48 hand-tipped colour plates, naturalistic watercolour paintings by Wendy Walsh, who works only from nature, painting the actual plants that are her subjects. Each has been carefully hand stuck to the page and could easily be removed without damaging the book for framing. The 48 paintings have been chosen because they are native plants of Ireland, are cultivars or garden plants, or found by Irish explorers or botanists. To make the plant come to life, as well as the people who raised or discovered them, there is an excellent background to these plants and flowers. It may be true that the notes on the plates by Dr Charles Nelson informs and the introduction by Ruth Isabel Ross entertains. Among our favourites are the Spring Gentian with its brilliant deep blue flowers in five corolla lobes, the Killarney Fern, a now rare and endangered species in the British Isles, and the eye-poppingly scarlet red Bloody Cranesbill Geranium which thrives in lime-rich soils. The yellow Flag Iris, Kerry Lily, spectacular Pitcher plant, a native of North America with its hooded flowers and single pendant blooms, Cottonweed, Cowslip, Strawberry Tree found around Cork, a Dorset Heath found around Connemara in 1846 and the beautiful Old Irish Blue Primula are other favourites. This special and spectacular volume measures 11½" x 14½", has gold end papers, 224 pages and is just under 1½" thick. Thames & Hudson publication. Published price: £75 Bibliophile price: £40.00 ORDER YOURS TODAY:- http://www.bibliophilebooks.com/epages/Bibliophile.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Bibliophile/Products/82802
