First autofocus camera ever • Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera with Sonar Autofocus [4K] [CC]
A journey into the past to discover how modern and current this device still is nowadays. In 1972, during the Polaroid company meeting, the founder Edwin Land stepped onto the stage, pulled something out of his jacket pocket, and took five instant photos in just ten seconds. That strange thing was the new Polaroid SX-70, and it was the camera that made truly instant photography possible for the first time ever. The one described in this video is indeed an SX-70 Land Camera with Sonar Autofocus in the silver-black color scheme. In 1978 a sonar system was introduced for the evaluation of the distance so as to offer the possibility of focusing automatically. Thus, this version can be considered the first true autofocus reflex on the market. The production ended in 1981 but it is curious to know that a camera was flown aboard the Skylab space station in the early 1970s.
