Rae Howell: Bee-Sharp Honeybee Sketches. New Music for String Quartet.. Save the Bees!
Inspired and directly derived from extensive research of honeybees (primarily their rhythm, pitch, and waggle dance patterns!), Bee-Sharp Honeybee magnifies the subtle intricacies of the beehive.. The Bee-Sharp Honeybee Sketches are composed by Rae Howell, written for string quartet, and performed by the Laurels String Quartet during a house concert in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Working in collaboration with hobby beekeepers, scientists and researchers from the University of Minnesota (UMN) Bee Research Lab, the Bee Squad, musicians, animators and a documentary filmmaker, the Bee-Sharp Honeybee Project began with an immersion in field recordings. Collating technical data, and analysing technical & musical (frequency & rhythm) details of the bee buzz, spectrograms were created (visual colour maps of frequency details) and frequency line graphs, which evolved into musical ideas..
