Sen. Flake Introduces Bills to Rein in EPA in Arizona
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) today launched his second annual legislative initiative to rein in overreaching and economically harmful Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air regulations in Arizona. Flake coordinated with local, state and national stakeholders to develop the following three bills, which will serve as the centerpiece of his ongoing initiative: “Clean air and economic growth are not mutually exclusive,” said Flake. “By holding the EPA accountable for its actions, this bill package will increase regulatory certainty for states and businesses that must deal with the agency. And it will do so while ensuring that the Clean Air Act does exactly what it was designed to do – protect public health.” *Ozone Regulatory Delay and Extension of Assessment Length (ORDEAL) Act* -Purpose: A bill to give the EPA more time to review and revise ozone and other air quality standards, ensuring a more certain regulatory environment for state air-quality agencies and businesses. *Commonsense Legislative Exceptional Events Reform (CLEER) Act* Purpose: A bill to streamline EPA regulations intended to ensure that states and localities are not considered in violation of federal air quality standards due to uncontrollable, naturally occurring events – otherwise known as “exceptional events” – such as the dust storms and wildfires that occur in Arizona. *Agency PAYGO for Greenhouse Gases Act* -Purpose: A bill to limit EPA’s ability to impose the costs of greenhouse gas (GHG) rules on other federal agencies without first providing an offset. ###
