GSV2020 Tutorial: Introdution to Sensor Web (Simon Jirka)
Sensor Web technologies enable the efficient sharing of (in-situ) observation data via distributed Web-based infrastructures. This tutorial provides an introduction to the main building blocks for developing and setting up Sensor Web infrastructures. The first block comprises an introduction to relevant interoperability standards. This includes Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards, such as the SensorThings API and the Sensor Observation Service. It also addresses further aspects, such as Internet of Things protocols (MQTT) and aspects of semantic interoperability (e.g. vocabularies). Subsequently, we discuss typical architectural approaches and system designs. The topics of this block comprise approaches for data loading as well as data storage. We complement this by introducing how Sensor Web components could be integrated into existing system landscapes dealing with the management of observation data. Finally, the tutorial introduces application examples from different domains. The specific challenges and requirements of these scenarios are discussed together with a presentation of the chosen solutions.
