“The Arctic Transport and Transit Potential”

Watch in Russian: https://youtu.be/knVZHqhBLKY Over the past few years, the Arctic has drawn international attention in terms of potentially becoming an alternative transit region for cargo transportation. Amid the rising global interest towards the Northern routes and passages, Russia is pointing out the obvious transit perks of the Northern Sea Route – the shortest maritime route connecting the European part of Russia with the Far East. Will it be possible to organize a regular shipping line via the Northern Sea Route in a short-to-medium term perspective and will it be viable compared to the existing transit routes? What are the main differences between the countries in terms of their approach to defining the legal status of the Northern Sea Route? How does the ongoing international crisis influence the development of the Arctic navigation? 0:00 Moderator: Vitaliy Chernov, Head of the Analytics Department, Information and Analytical Agency “PortNews” 4:58 Pavel Gudev, Senior Research Fellow, Head of Group for US and Canadian Policy in the Oceans, Center for North American Studies, IMEMO 18:11 Maxim Kulinko, Deputy Director of the Northern Sea Route Directorate of the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM 35:38 Prof. Sungwon Hong, Director, Institute of Arctic Logistics (IAL) Youngsan University, Busan (South Korea) 47:27 Gregory Hersh, Lieutenant Commander, United States Coast Guard. 56:48 Will the Northern Sea Route become a regular passage with a clear schedule? 1:01:25 Permissive procedure for passage of foreign vessels through the Northern Sea Route 1:03:01 Cooperation of Russia, China and South Korea in the development of the Arctic navigation 1:08:18 Northern transit corridor: problems and perspectives 1:10:56 US-Russian cooperation in the area of maritime safety 1:14:15 Korean interests in sea routes through the Arctic 1:25:56 Igor Pavlovskiy, director of the Information and Analytical Center of the Project Office for Arctic Development (PORA) «The Transport and Transit Potential of the Arctic Region» has become the third discussion in a series called the «Arctic Sessions» – a project that acquired grant support from the Gorchakov Fund.
