Fight The White Dragon! - Aronian vs Wesley So | 2019 Tata Steel India Rapid & Blitz

Title: Fight The White Dragon! - Aronian vs Wesley So | 2019 Tata Steel India Rapid & Blitz Opening: English Opening Hello Chess Friends and Welcome to the channel. The game that I'm going to show you is from the final day of the Tata Steel. Aronian with the white pieces against Wesley So played in round 12 of the blitz session. Let's get started 1. c4 {the English opening} e5 {the most aggressive answer} 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Nf3 Nc6 {the four knight system} 4. g3 d5 {this central push leads to a variation called Reversed Dragon} 5. cxd5 Nxd5 6. Bg2 Bc5 7. O-O O-O {this black setup is interesting. It's used by many top players but the most important game played in the last years is the black victory by Grischuk against Eljanov in 2017.} 8. d3 Re8 9. Bd2 Nxc3 10. bxc3 {probably bishop capture is a bit more precise. Only two games in database. Bg4 was played before. Wesley So plays a novelty} Bb6 {that is a better move. We know that Wesley, with the white peices is one of the strongest english players} 11. Qc2 Bf5 {watching the queen } 12. Nh4 Bg4 13. Rae1 Qd7 {creates the battery against the bishop in fianchetto} 14. Kh1 {unpins f2} Rad8 15. Bg5 f6 16. Be3 Bh3 17. Rg1 {is a strange move. g2 is already protected twice. Moving the other rook to b1 or c1 is better} Bxg2+ 18. Rxg2 {is a mistake, the rook is in a bad position} Bxe3 19. fxe3 e4 {if white captures, his pawn structure becomes really bad, but d4 is even worse because after} 20. dxe4 (20. d4 {here comes} g5 {and the knight is lost}) 20... Qe6 21. Nf3 Kh8 {is a good move. IF} (21... Qxe4 22. Qb3+) 22. Rb1 b6 23. Nd4 Qc4 {because of course black doesn't want to capture on d4 improving white's pawn structure} 24. g4 {g5 is in the cards} h6 {controlling g5} 25. h4 Ne5 26. g5 fxg5 27. hxg5 h5 28. g6 c5 {removes the knight from the center} 29. Rg5 {is a mistake} (29. Nf5 {is one of the best squares for the knight} {then} Ng4 {is strong. closes the g-file and clears the e-file}) 29... Kg8 {also a mistake that loses almost all the advantage. Black has no problems after} (29... cxd4 30. Rxh5+ Kg8 31. exd4 Ng4 {is stronger than Knight captures on f6. The knight can both move back to f6 defending the king or jump to f2 with check}) 30. Nf5 Ng4 31. Rxh5 Nf6 32. Rh4 Rxe4 33. Rxe4 Nxe4 34. Qb3 Qxb3 35. axb3 Nxc3 {there is a slight advantage for Black} 36. Ne7+ {is a blunder. Much better to protect the pawn with Re1} Kf8 37. Nc6 Nxb1 38. Nxd8 Nd2 {removing the b-pawn, Wesley has 3 connected pass pawns on the queenside} 39. Kg2 Nxb3 40. Kf3 a5 41. Ne6+ Ke7 42. Nxg7 a4 {also Kf6 is very good} 43. Nf5+ Kf6 44. g7 Kf7 {controlling g8 and there are no good moves for White} 45. Nd6+ Kxg7 46. Nb5 Nd2+ 47. Kf4 Kf6 {is useless} 48. e4 Nc4 {this is the move that wins the game} 49. e5+ Ke6 50. Ke4 a3 51. Nc3 Nxe5 {Aronian resigns. Black is two pawns up and these pawns are impossible to stop. Let's make some other moves} 52. Kf4 b5 53. Ne4 c4 54. Nc5+ Ke7 {where the knight can't give check anymore. Losing the Knight is not important} 55. Kxe5 a2 {the a-pawn is unstoppable.} 0-1 A very nice game in the English, a very nice victory for Wesley So. We are lucky because today there are many interesting games to watch together. So I go back to work and we will meet again soon. Photos by: Lennart Ootes FIDE Master and Professional Photographer You can follow him here: @LennartOotes https://lennartootes.com/
