That's why I'm going to quickly explain to you what prostate cancer is, how we treat it, and how to go about making that decision. First off, what is the prostate? The prostate is a gland, and glands are organs in our bodies that secrete substances for one reason or another. And the prostate is about the size of a golf ball, wraps around the urethra, right in front of the rectum. It helps to make and secrete the fluid that combines with sperm for reproductive purposes. So while we don't need the prostate to live, it's important if we want to make kids. Now cancer is when the normal cells of our body start acting abnormally, growing out of control. In this case the cells of the prostate gland start to malfunction and do just that. And while it can be aggressive and spread quickly, prostate cancer is oftentimes slow to grow. In fact, prostate cancer is mostly diagnosed at an early stage, and at a low risk, which means there's a variety of ways to treat it that all have similar survival outcomes. So real quick, let's talk about it, because when a guy's diagnosed, he's going to get asked what option he thinks is best for him. Option one is surgery, a prostatectomy, okay? Ectomy meaning removal of, and a prostate, meaning, well, prostate. This is either done by hands, or with a robot. Which, remember, is also controlled by hands. So either way, a surgeon's experience and skill are important factors. ...
