YEAR 3 MATHEMATICS - Teaching Resource: Time measurement

This teaching resource - focuses on the Year 3 Mathematics content descriptor "Tell time to the minute & investigate the relationship between units of time (elaboration: recognising there are 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute.)", as outlined in the Australian Curriculum's Measurement and Geometry Strand (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2011). The Proficiency Strand also outlines the following learning components: UNDERSTANDING YR 3 -- connecting number representations with number sequences YR 3 -- partitioning and combining numbers flexibly FLUENCY YR 3 -- recalling multiplication facts (five times tables, in order to tell time to the minute) PROBLEM SOLVING YR 3 -- using number properties to continue number patterns REASONING YR 3 -- using generalising from number properties The activities and pedagogical approaches outlined herein can be adapted to suit prior and subsequent learning in varying year levels (Measurement: Time), and diverse / dynamic student needs pertaining to learning and working. Furthermore, although a learning sequence promoting optimal learning outcomes is integral to students' success, it should be noted that this resource is also adaptable in terms of responding to a class's progress with a more non-linear approach to learning.
