What's so special about Battle Royal Games? E3 2018 & Battle Royal Games - State of the Art
At E3 2018 and prior the games industry demonstrated their interest in investing into the battle royal trend by announcing games and modes, e.g. in Battlefield V and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. But what's so special about Battle Royal games like PUBG or Fortnite? In this episode of my new State of the Art series I try to analyse and answer these questions. To do this I also have a look at another popular trend of recent years: the DotA Clones like League of Legends or Dota 2 and their history. The Battle Royal trend and the DotA-like trend have for sure several things in common. #battleroyal #gamedesign I think both subgenres Battle Royal games and DotA-likes (or MOBAs) solve a game design problem of their parent genre (tactical FPS games with lard maps like Battlefield and RTS games like StarCraft), which is part of their success story. This is also my first try in a new way of covering conventions like E3. Instead of summarizing E3 2018, I want to discuss specific topics and trends of it in depth. There is for sure room for improvement (this is more an experiment), but I hope you like it. Also in case you have missed my last LotR lore video, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6cJc1ZMLKw PS: I had to reupload the video, because of a claim. I hope it works now. The Philosopher's Games / TPhGames Follow me on Twitter for updates and news: @PhilosophGames https://twitter.com/philosophgames I usually make analytical gaming and Tolkien & LotR lore content.
