English Tense: Simple Present / Present Indefinite tense (1)

BASIC ENGLISH 21: This session - "English Tense" discusses the main areas for the use of Simple Present or Present Indefinite Tense. Among all the English tense subgroups the Simple Present/Present Indefinite tense is the most frequently used format; and at the same time, this is the most flexible tool also. The tense, the simplest form of all its kindred formats, often gives the status or statement about a person or thing in which the reference to any time factor may not be much important. And because of its flexibility, it may easily encroach upon the past and future times. The main areas of application for the Simple Present tense are a general statement or status description, habitual or repeated action, universal truth or general truth, a future schedule or timetable, story of a book or film retold, expression of some feeling, thought and reaction and radio or television commentary, etc. Basic English 22, i.e. Simple Present Tense (2) discusses the changes of verbs in this format.
