In this lecture we have started the study of major components of the plasma membrane. As we have discussed in previous lecture the cell membrane has been consist of two major components: lipid bilayer and proteins. Lipid bilayer is the fundamental structure of the plasma membrane and is composed of three major classes of lipids: phospholipids, sterols and glycolipids. All the lipid molecules in the membrane are amphipathic/amphiphillic in nature means they have a polar head and non polar tails. Phospholipids are the major lipid content of the plasma membrane and can be classified into two categories according to their backbone molecule. Phospholipids derived from the glycerol are named as Glycerophospholipids (phosphoglycerides). Second class of phospholipids derived from the sphingosine and named as sphingolipids. In this lecture we have covered basics of the glycerophospholipids.
