STUG Meeting June 2023 Starlink
The Sarasota Technology User Group Presentation Meeting For June 7, 2023. The topic is Starlink. The speaker is Phil Sorrentino. Starlink is a constellation of satellites operated by SpaceX that provides internet access to client devices such as phones and computers, allowing them to connect to numerous servers. Phil Sorrentino is the Secretary of the Sun City Center Computer Club and a past president of the Sarasota Computer Users Group. In this network architecture, each computer is designated as either a client or a server. The servers, large computer systems situated at the other end of the internet, run specialized server programs and share their resources with clients. On the other hand, clients are computers seeking specific actions from servers, making requests and receiving results. The communication between clients and servers relies on a common set of protocols called TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). TCP/IP was developed by the government and made accessible to all computer systems, enabling seamless communication across networks. Its adoption in the 1980s replaced the proprietary networks maintained by various companies, fostering interconnectivity among computers. Chapters: 00:00:02 - Introduction to Starlink and its potential role in client server technology 00:03:15 - Understanding Client-Server Technology and the Cloud 00:06:43 - The History and Importance of TCP/IP in Computer Networking 00:10:14 - The Journey of a Message from Client to Server 00:13:34 - Connecting to the Internet and Communicating with Servers 00:17:00 - The Future of Starlink: How it Works and a SpaceX Launch 00:20:54 - Watching a SpaceX Launch and Overview of Starlink Constellation 00:24:51 - Introduction to Starlink and Low Earth Orbit Satellites 00:28:28 - Comparing Starlink to Satellite TV and the Importance of Latency 00:32:07 - The Technology behind Starlink Antennas 00:35:18 - Building and Designing a Phased Array Antenna 00:38:48 - How Antenna Beams are Used to Track Satellites with Starlink 00:42:21 - The Wonder of Antenna Systems and Starlink Updates 00:49:37 - Satellites, Starlink, and Space Discussion 00:53:01 - Possibility of using satellite internet for a housing association 00:56:11 - SpaceX's Rocket Technology and Achievements
