To increase your odds of survival, you always want to conceal your location whenever possible. The best way to do this is to travel through bushy or foresty areas. The trees and shrubbery will hide your location to any enemies. Crossing open terrain with no cover will not only make you stand out to your enemy, it will leave you with no cover to hide behind either once they start firing at you.
