VM Density Test on Intel® Xeon® Platinum Processor 8170 @ 2.10 GHz for VM (4CPUs / 4GB RAM)
The following video demonstrates the number of virtual machines that can be created on a dual socket server with Intel(R) Xeon(R) Platinum 8170 Processor and 98 GB RAM. Virtual machine configuration used in this demonstration - Intel® Xeon® Platinum Processor 8170 Processor @2.10 GHZ & 98 GB RAM Virtual Machine Configuration. Each virtual machine that is created in this demo, starts consuming resources 4 CPUs and 4 GB RAM to depict realistic scenario. At 01:48 the virtual machine creation fails while spawning 23rd VM. In this demo it is clear that the bottleneck in spawning virtual machines is the limited RAM available on the server. This has drastically impacted upon the pCPU to vCPU consolidation ratio - 0.84:1, which is less than 1, that depicts the underutilization of server resources, which is a common case of wrong server sizing. Total number of virtual machines created in this demonstration are - Intel® Xeon® Platinum Processor 8170 Processor @2.10 GHZ & 98 GB RAM Virtual Machine Configuration. Number of Virtual Machines Successfully created- 22 Note: The pCPU to vCPU consolidation ratio is calculated based upon the processor configuration. This VM Density Test is conducted as part of the eNlight Cloud research program at ESDS.
