Tampa Style Cubano Burger ~ Cubano Sandwich Inspired Burger ~ Noreen's Kitchen
Today I am sharing with you, my burger inspired by the Tampa style Cubano sandwich. This is not only delicious, but has a rich history associated with it. Do not be mistaken. The Cuban is 100% American, created by Cuban immigrants who served sandwiches to an amazing melting pot of people during the turn of the century in Florida's booming cigar industry. This burger is inspired by that sandwich. It's humble roots are a history lesson for us all. The flavor will not be forgotten and you are just going to love it! To give you a bit of background, the Cubano sandwich is something that hailed from Cuban tradition. While they did not have pork until the Spaniards introduced it to their culture, they used fish and fowl. When pork and ham made an appearance it was enthusiastically substituted. The tobacco, grown in Cuba was shipped to Florida where there were over 100 cigar factories at the turn of the century around the early 1900s. A melting pot of immigrants from Cuba, Spain, Italy, Germany and other places converged to work and make cigars. They needed inexpensive food and the Cubano sandwich was born. The sandwich is layers of ham, shredded mojo pork, Swiss cheese, and if you are in Tampa, Genoa salami topped with dill pickles and spread with yellow mustard. The soft bun is then pressed and grilled, much like a panini and enjoyed. I have taken my inspiration for my burger from this sandwich. I had no idea about the history until I started researching it. This is what I love about food. Not only does it feed the body, it feeds the mind and the soul. My burger starts with a pork burger patty, seasoned with my Mojo seasoning rub and pan fried. I melted the Swiss cheese on top. Since I could not find Cuban bread, I used a Ciabatta bun. Maybe not a great substitute for the Casave bread and it's tart flavor, but it is what I had. I layered a slice of ham then the burger, then salami, pickles and spread the bun top and bottom with a generous amount of yellow mustard. On the surface, you may think, like my girls and my Dad did, that this sounds odd, but trust me this thing is DELICIOUS! Seriously satisfying and rich and full of flavor! I will leave you with this, when asked to demonstrate the Cubano, one woman, who's grandfather is know to have created it in America, said this about the sandwich: The bread and the mojo pork represented the Cubans The ham represented the Spaniards The Salami represented the Italians The Swiss cheese melted all the cultures together The mustard and pickles represented the Germans. No matter where you hail from, you need to try this burger or a Cubano sandwich! When you do, remember what I have shared because when you bite into it, you are not just eating a sandwich, you are enjoying a piece of history and rich cultural heritage! I hope you give this burger a try sometime soon and I hope you love it! Happy Eating!
