Pottery Basics - Hand Building Frog Pottery Bowl Using Live Hosta Leaf

*Watch with subtitles on to get step-by-step instructions for pottery basics of hand building a bowl in video! How Troy hand builds his frog plates out of clay: Troy uses a sprig mold to create the frog. He dabs corn starch in the mold before inserting the clay to ensure that the clay does not stick. Then he pushes the clay in to fill all of the mold space. After that, he scores the back so that it's ready to adhere to the bowl. He removes the clay from the mold and cuts the excess clay away from the frog. Troy then lays down a hosta leaf from our garden and uses a rolling pin to imprint the leaf pattern on the clay. The bottom of the leaf leaves the best imprint pattern. Then he cuts around the outside of the leaf to create the final shape of the bowl. After removing the excess clay, he lays it down over a rounded form to create the bowl indentation. Once the edges of the bowl are cleaned, he uses slip to adhere the frog to the plate after scoring both.
