Rescue Yurt the Silent Assassin in 3-2, then beat him in the Nexus once he attacks you (after he's murdered some people in the Nexus!) If your Character Tendency is Pure Black, Mephistopheles will appear upstairs in the Nexus and give you a series of quests.
