'Andean Suite' for string quartet and guitar (2017) | Javier Farias

Apollo Chamber Players presents the world premiere of 'Andean Suite' for guitar and string quartet by Chilean-American composer Javier Farias. 'Andean Suite' is based folk rhythms of the Andean region, including Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. 'Andean Suite' is the 10th work of Apollo's 20x2020 commissioning project, with the aim of commissioning 20 new multi-cultural works by 2020. PROGRAM NOTE I. Yawar Fiesta The Yawar Fiesta is a celebration in Peru accompanied by a raging fight between a bull and an Andean condor. It is conducted on July 29 every year, a day after Peru’s Independence Day. This ceremony is a symbolic representation of the power of the Andean peoples (the condor) over the Spanish (the bull.) II. Huayno The huayno comes from the Altiplano (“high plains”), a part of the Andean mountain chain that encompasses what is now the east of Bolivia, the center and south of Peru, the northeast of Argentina and the north of Chile. This sad, slow and lyrical rhythm is probably the most authentic form of Andean music and it represents a popular appreciation of shared ethnic cultures and has provided inspiration for composers of classical, popular and folkloric music alike for generations. III. Diablada This is arguably the most renowned traditional dance of Bolivia and forms the main part of the Oruro Carnival. La Diablada is a fabulous display of heavy, colorful masks and elaborate costumes, and is accompanied by traditional musical instruments from the Andes, such as the zampoña (pan flute) and the quena (a vertical flute). World premiere at Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston (MATCH), in Houston, TX on March 31, 2017. Commission underwritten by the C. Howard Pieper Foundation. Apollo Chamber Players Matthew Detrick and Anabel Ramirez, violins Whitney Bullock, viola Matthew Dudzik, cello Guest Artist/Composer: Javier Farias, guitar Learn more at: apollochamberplayers.org Javier Farias: http://javierfarias.cl/ Videography by Ben Doyle, Runaway Productions; Audio by Ryan Edwards and Shannon Smith, Coincident Sound
