It is specifically made for babies aged 5 months – 24 months or so. It’s meant for older babies and toddlers who are still napping in the crib. There are 2 reasons why the program specifically starts at 2 months. Reason 1: Most babies can’t self-settle until 5-6 months The majority of babies don’t develop the ability to self-settle until 5 or 6 months old. Some younger babies can settle themselves down to sleep. But a lot of other younger babies can’t. In the younger stages, it’s really just a natural ability. So we work with your individual baby. For sure, by 5-6 months, your baby has gone through a developmental leap. We see that the majority of babies are ready to start settling themselves down to sleep, which is what the program is all about. It’s teaching your baby more independent sleep habits. So that’s the first reason. Reason 2: The 4 Month Sleep Regression I really like to make sure that your baby has gone through the 4 month sleep regression. The 4 month sleep regression is terrible! The 4 month sleep regression is actually a combination of 3 different developments for your baby. The first aspect: Your baby’s brain goes through a big development around 4 months old. Your baby’s sleep patterns start to resemble more of an adult’s sleep patterns. This is a great sign that your baby is developing. But what that often means, is that they don’t spend as long in deep sleep and they are more easily awoken from sleep. They can be a little harder to settle down to sleep. The second aspect: Your baby usually also goes through a big growth spurt around this age. They wake up more in the night because they are genuinely hungry. That’s probably temporary. The third aspect of the 4 month sleep regression is that your baby is often transitioning from around 4 naps a day to 3 naps. That doesn’t apply to all babies. But for some babies, it’s the 3 different developments all happening in the same month. So what we often see is that babies’ sleep patterns just go out the window and parents don’t know what happened. That’s why my program is for babies of 5 months and older. My program is broken down into 5 lessons. The first 4 lessons are really centred around building a healthy sleep foundation for your baby. Most parents of babies of any age can use these steps and they’ll see an improvement in their child’s sleep. The last lesson, Lesson 5, is the nuts and bolts of how to get your baby used to falling asleep on his own and sleeping longer stretches overnight. This is where we do the sleep training aspect of getting your baby sleeping well. For that lesson, I think your baby should really be at least 5 months old before we start implementing those changes and expecting your baby to respond as he should. Because remember, for babies that are younger than 5 months, they don’t yet have the ability to settle themselves. It may just be a futile exercise for you. It could frustrate you. It could frustrate your baby. All that being said, you can definitely sign up if your baby is a little bit younger, you’re really desperate and you’re okay with the fact that you won’t be able to implement every step. Or, you can just wait a few weeks. And then you can sign up when you know that your baby can do everything and really by ready.
