Mixed Media Pad, Sketch Journal for Oil Paintings Part 1, Sketches on Paper
This is the first video for a new series of projects I want to do. I want to learn how to paint with oils. In the past I have painted with acrylics and watercolors. I tried doing a few paintings with oils but I haven't done any artwork that I would like to post and share. I tried painting a few pages here and there in the last couple of years without much success. I have been doing some research and getting together a few ideas. I thought that starting with simple subjects and working my way up to more complicated things might be helpful. I usually paint on a canvas. For this project I'll do sketches on paper. I got a mixed media paper pad at a local art shop. I'm trying to keep this project as simple as possible. I want to try new things for my personal growth. I'm also trying to use materials that are affordable and easy to find. I want to support local businesses and I get what I can in my area. Whenever I get supplies I try to find items that are discounted. The paper pad I got had a retail price of $9.99 US dollars. The pad was on sale and I ended up paying $5.00 US dollars. It comes with 60 sheets of paper. It's 7 inches by 10 inches or 17.78 centimeters by 25.4 centimeters. I'm also using materials I already had including a regular pencil, kneaded eraser and pencil sharpener. I used photographs I took for this project as well as others I had from previous ones. I don't work from images on a screen. I like to make prints from my own images and work from them to avoid copyright issues. I have a hand on a lot of the steps to get to the final product. I want to start out using simple shapes and colors. I decided to use images of fruits and vegetables and a plastic mini skull as subjects. Most of the fruits are simple round or oval shapes and some are more rectangular but still simple. The mini skull is also a combination of round shapes. I have a few videos on taking pictures with those subjects in my channel. The plan for this project is to use my own images. Sketch from the images on the pad and paint them using oils. Because I used so many images it will be a long term project. I'll try to work on it as much as possible when I get free time. One thing I realize after almost finishing the sketches is that I should have used gesso to coat the paper before drawing on the paper. The gesso will prevent the paint from soaking through the paper and make the paint stick better. So far I have only used white gesso for my paintings on canvas. At some point I found out that there is clear gesso. So I got the idea of using it on top of the sketches I already made and see how that works. I did find some clear gesso at a local art shop but they only had it in a small bottle. It comes with 16 oz or 473 ml. I wanted to get a larger bottle to make it cheaper in the long run but I decided to try it anyway. I paid around $25 US dollars and the price for the white gesso at the same size was pretty much the same. In theory I can apply the gesso on top of the sketches and end up with the same results. The pages in the journal are perforated so they can be teared off. I want to remove them from the spiral without damaging the paper. The spiral has a shape that allows you to do that by pulling the sides of the spiral apart. I didn't try that on this video. When I get to that part I'll see if I can record it and post it in case someone finds it useful. This will be a long term project and I don't know how much of it I will record. I'd like to get a few paintings recorded as I do them. I just don't know how much time it will take or how much of the process I'll be able to record.
