Q'ESWACHAKA, THE LAST INCA HANGING BRIDGE

Q'ESWACHAKA, THE LAST INCA HANGING BRIDGE During Inca times, there was a vast network of trails called Qhapac Ñan, a great masterpiece of Inca engineering and organization that ran over 30,000 km of ancient trails. These connected the present-day countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, covering a large part of the Andes with their rugged and impressive Andean geography. The skill and ability with which this network of trails was built, is also reflected in the use of diverse and ingenious types of bridges to cross rivers, mountain slopes, or deep ravines. Among the types of Inca bridges that were developed are stone bridges, wooden bridges, floating bridges, oroyas, and large vegetable fibre suspension bridges. These structures have been a source of admiration for centuries. Garcilaso de la Vega stated that some ethnic groups of the Contisuyo region voluntarily submitted to the Incas after seeing the majesty of these bridges. Queshuachaca is an opportunity in which the communities of the Quehue district strengthen their social ties and revitalize their great cultural and religious heritage. The preservation of this Incan ancestral knowledge serves as a source of enjoyment for both locals and foreigners alike. This bridge represents an important symbol of the culltural heritage for these people.
