Crysis 3 on the GTX 980 Ti Taming the Beast

Hey folks, Ever since I bought the HD 6950 last year one of the most featured benchmarks on the channel has been Crysis 3. Why? Simply put, even 3 years after its initial release its still a graphical powerhouse and a shining light to the graphical fidelity that can only really be seen on the PC just take a look at the console versions and compare them to the image quality you get on a £20 to see what I mean. So far we've learned two things, firstly not even the mighty Rx 480 overlooked and with its 8Gb memory buffer can tame the game at very high settings with AA and secondly it favours nvidia cards. So with the recent purchase of the 980Ti do we finally have a card that can tame Cryteks Beast of a game?! So let's boot the game up on the overclocked Ryzen 7 system and see what we get. We are running at 1080p and on the very high preset with 2 x SMAA turned and 16x aniosotropic filtering.. to ensure a beautifully polished graphical experience.. But how about the frame rates? Well I've left on the OSD for reference so you might have already clocked the framerates but through the whole welcome to the jungle chapter - which is notoriously gpu intensive, the 980Ti averaged out at nearly 97.2fps with 1% lows of 59.8 and 5% lows of 68.9fps. What this means is that even on the most demanding chapters, there were only a few times where the game dipped below 60FPS. Taking a look at the readouts for the previous chapter, which is less open the GTX 980Ti returned an average of 107.9fps with 1% lows of 96.5 and the lowest 5% averaged out at 97.3. Showing perhaps the importance of doing multiple benchmark runs at different locations! Overall then the average of both chapters which were completed in roughly the same ammount of time give or take a few seconds was an overall average of 102.5fps with 1% minimums of 78.1fps and the average minimum 5% figure coming in at 83.1. For those interested, the absolute minimum frame rate seen was a one frame dip to 53fps in the welcome to the jungle chapter and one of only TWO frames… yes two frames, to drop below 55fps Blistering pace and the beast finally tamed it seems. Although this does present a nice opportunity to dabble into super sampled resolutions.. A video for another time though.. This card is really impressing me so far and was an absolute steal for nearly £100 less than I sold the Rx 480 for. But it does make me the question do you need that much horsepower under the hood? Obviously the enthusiast in me screams yes but the realist is telling me no. I've played the game through on sub £100 gpus even on sub £20 cards and still thoroughly enjoyed it. The Polish is nice, but it if the game underneath is a turd… well I'm sure there's a saying in there somewhere Thankfully Crysis 3 is a great title and for now I'm going to keep playing it with all the bells and whistles and lock it at 60 for that ultimate silky smooth experience.. I'd love to know if you folks have ever felt your GPU was being underutilised and if any of you made the jump to 1440p lately to punish that silicone a little further, on top of that, let me know what kind of data you folks actually want to see in the benchmarks and which numbers you find most useful, during these runs there always a digital sack of numbers that never make the screen so be sure to let me know!
