Protecting Pedro - Building Conservation Capacity

Starting in 2005, The Nature Conservancy in partnership with the Government of Jamaica, has been working on the Pedro Bank to develop conservation solutions; including thorough environmental and social assessments, a management plan and the establishment of a fish sanctuary surrounding Southwest Cay (Bird Cay). From June 25 to July 3, 2012, a workshop was held in the Pedro cays on Bird and Middle Cays to build capacity for Seabird research and conservation. The workshop, which was sponsored by The Nature Conservancy and the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds, was instructed by Patrick Jodice of Clemson University and Ann Sutton of SCSCB, and had participants from TNC Jamaica Program, the University of the West Indies, Mona. and the National Environmental Planning Agency, GOJ. This 11:30 minute video reveals rare seabird footage from Bird Cay, calls for the preservation of Bird Cay, shows workshop activities and explains the urgent need for seabird research and conservation in the Caribbean. The garbage that the birds are nesting in is on Middle Cay, a heavily populated cay with extreme solid waste and sanitation problems, no one lives on Bird Cay and therefore it is free of these problems. This video was produced by Esther Figueroa, Vagabond Media, for The Nature Conservancy. 2012. www.jamaicaforsale.net
