Opening of the exhibition “I Close My Eyes and Listen to Istanbul…” Любимыми сюжетами местных фотографов были съемки мечетей (символ города — Айя-София, или собор Святой Софии), экстравагантных дворцов, древних крепостей Румелихисар и Едикуле, сохранившихся античных и византийских памятников, Галатского моста и пролива Босфор, морских пейзажей, а также портретов жителей многонациональной империи. В течение трех десятилетий, в 1850-х — 1880-х годах, главным фотографом Константинополя считался Паскаль Себа. Конкуренцию ему составляли швед Гийом Берггрен и семейные предприятия — студии братьев Гюльмез и братьев Абдулла, прославившихся видовыми фотографиями и портретами государственных деятелей. После смерти Паскаля Себа в 1886 году его дело продолжил сын Жан Паскаль Себа, добившийся не меньшей известности. В 1880-х годах он работал совместно с французом Поликарпом Жоайе. In the course of three decades, in the 1850s-1880s, Pascal Sébah was regarded as the main photographer of Constantinople. His rivals were Guillaume Berggren and the family enterprises — studios of Gulmez Fréres and Abdullah Fréres who won fame with their photographic views and portraits of public figures. On the decease of Pascal Sébah in 1886, his son, Jean Pascal Sébah, succeeded his father and was no less famous as a photographer. In the 1880s, he cooperated with Frenchman Polycarpe Joaillier. Since 1870s, photo studios appeared beyond the limits of the Turkish capital. So, Frenchmen Alphonse Rubellin opened a studio in Izmir where one could purchase views of the city and photographs of the ancient monuments in Smyrna.
