The city is "run" by three main mafia "families": Vinci, Clemente and Falcone. The main character, Vito Scaletta, moved with his family from Sicily to the United States as a child. As a boy, Vito thought that in America all his dreams would become a reality, but in reality everything turned out differently. Vito's father, Antonio, worked at the docks for a measly pittance. A few years later, according to the official version, he fell drunk into the water and drowned. At school, Vito became friends with another boy, Joe Barbaro, a well-known bully in the district. Both of them were from poor families, therefore, having become best friends, they quickly became addicted to the basics of banditry - working as pickpockets, robbing stores, etc. Once grown up, Joe and Vito decided to rob a jewelry store. The first serious case was not entirely successful: they were noticed by a policeman. Vito was caught and Joe managed to escape. The Second World War was on, volunteers with knowledge of the Italian language were required at the front, so Vito was given a choice: go to prison and serve his term, or take the path of a soldier and atone for his guilt before society.
