Trinity St Sergius Monastery
Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery in Sergiyev Posad, about 55 kilometers northeast of Moscow. The monastery, founded in the 14th century by St. Sergius as a remote settlement in a dense forest, is one of five monasteries granted a high status of Lavra. It is one of the most significant centres of Russian Orthodox culture and it is often called "Russian Vatican". Patriarch Alexy II on July 18, 2002 blessed two giant church bells made to replace a pair that were torn down from a tower at one of the country's holiest sites and destroyed in 1932 under Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.
