How the Tick Immune System Works

Tick bites cause about 329,000 cases of Lyme Disease per year! To prevent this vector-borne disease, we need to know more about how ticks acquire, maintain, and transmit disease. Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine are studying the tick immune system to give us some answers. -Discussion on the tick immune system is from: 1) Shaw et al. “Infection-derived lipids elicit an immune deficiency circuit in arthropods.” Nature Comm (2017). https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms14401 2) McClure Carroll et al. “p47 licenses activation of the Immune Deficiency Pathway in the tick Ixodes scapularis.” PNAS (2018). https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2018/12/13/1808905116 -Lyme Disease numbers from https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/datasurveillance/ **This video was commissioned and paid for by the Pedra Lab at the University of Maryland School of Medicine** SimpleBiologist provides a quick description of the newest biology research.
