The SomaFM Player is a great app for independent radio lover. Broadcasting from San Francisco, SomaFM streams 14 unique listener-supported, commercial-free, underground/alternative radio stations. You can sort through the radio stations by Genre, or by the current number of listeners for each stream. Once you select the stream you would like to listen to, the player displays a song history of approximately the last 15-20 songs played, has a volume bar at the bottom, and a play button to start listening. To the right of the volume bar there is an options menu that lets you switch between high or low bandwidth, add this station to your favorites, and bookmark the current song. If you added any streams to you favorites, the Favorites sorting option will open up next to Genre, and Listeners. To check out your bookmarked songs, select the Bookmarks menu at the bottom. You will see a list with all the songs youve bookmarked and have the option to purchase them from the iTunes Store. To the right of the Bookmarks, you can stay updated with the latest news from SomaFM, and even choose to support the station, all the while having an option at the top of the screen to return to the station youre currently listening to. The SomaFM Player is an awesome app to have if you are a fan of the the commercial-free radio streams they have been broadcasting over the internet for the past 10 years. Although the app is not necessary to purchase since you can access their radio streams from Safari on your iPhone, the $3.99 is well worth the download to support SomaFM and keep their broadcasts commercial-free.
