Oral history interview with Rilla Askew: Oklahoma Authors

Interview Date: 10/30/2017 Interviewer: Blackshear, Emily Interview Location: Norman, Oklahoma Rilla Askew, born in 1951, recalls her youth in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, during the years of racism and societal boundaries. She discusses her writing process that includes studying history including the history of her ancestors. Askew talks about her early interest in acting and about moving to New York City in pursuit of that dream. She explains how she began writing, honing her skills, and developing fictional characters. She also shares her experience of publishing for the first time and gaining recognition as an author.
